✈️ How to find cheap last-minute flights

Need to fly soon? These are practical, widely used ways to keep the fare down when your trip is close – flexible dates and airports, fare alerts, carry-on only and checking the fine print before you pay.

1. Be flexible with your dates

Fares can change a lot from one day to the next on the same route. If your trip can move by a day or two, compare several departure and return dates instead of searching just one.

A month or calendar view in a flight search shows many dates at once, so you can spot the cheaper days quickly.

2. Check nearby airports at both ends

Many cities are served by more than one airport, and some routes are cheaper from a nearby city. Search the whole city or region rather than a single airport where the search allows it.

Add the cost and time of getting to and from a farther airport before you decide – a cheap fare can lose its advantage after a long taxi or train ride.

3. Compare on a flight search site, then check the airline

Flight search (metasearch) sites compare many airlines and travel agencies in one go, which is the fastest way to see what is available at short notice.

Once you have found a good option, also look at the same flight on the airline's own website. The price can be different, and booking directly with the airline can make changes, refunds and disruption help simpler.

4. Set fare alerts – even for a trip that is close

Most flight search sites and apps let you set a price alert for a route and date. Fares can move several times a day, so an alert can tell you about a drop without you searching again and again.

5. Try one-way tickets and different airlines

Two one-way tickets, sometimes on two different airlines, can cost less than a single return ticket.

Be careful with separate tickets for connecting flights: if the first flight is late and you miss the second, the second airline usually does not have to rebook you for free. Leave plenty of time between flights.

6. Travel with carry-on only

Many fares – especially on budget airlines – do not include a checked bag, and some only include a small personal item that fits under the seat. Packing light can avoid extra bag fees.

Check the airline's size and weight limits before you fly, because fees at the airport are often higher than adding a bag when you book.

7. Fly at less popular times

Flights at busy times – school holidays, big public holidays and the most popular days for weekend trips – often cost more. Early-morning or late-night departures and midweek days can be worth checking.

There is no single day of the week that is always cheapest to book or to fly, so compare the actual prices for your route rather than relying on a rule of thumb.

8. Compare the total price on budget airlines

A low headline fare on a budget airline may not include bags, seat selection, priority boarding or airport check-in, and some charge extra for certain payment methods.

Add up everything you need before comparing with a full-service airline, and check how far the airport is from where you are going.

9. Consider points and miles

If you collect airline or credit-card points, check award seats too. Award availability varies by airline and route, and seats sometimes appear close to departure – but taxes and fees are usually still payable.

10. Read the fare rules before you pay

Cheap fares are often non-refundable and may charge for changes. Read the fare rules so you know what happens if your plans change.

For flights to or from the US, US Department of Transportation rules let many bookings be held or cancelled without penalty within 24 hours – but the rule covers bookings made at least seven days before departure, so very last-minute tickets may not qualify. Always check the fare rules for your ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Are last-minute flights always more expensive?

Not always. Fares depend on demand and how many seats are left, so prices close to departure can be high on busy routes but lower on flights that are not selling well. Comparing flexible dates and nearby airports is the best way to find out.

What is the best day to book a cheap flight?

There is no single day that is always cheapest. Fares change with demand, so compare prices for your own route across several dates and set a fare alert instead of waiting for a particular day.

Can I cancel a last-minute flight within 24 hours?

It depends on the ticket. For flights to or from the US, DOT rules let many bookings be cancelled without penalty within 24 hours, but only when booked at least seven days before departure. Check your fare rules before you pay.

Are budget airlines always cheaper?

Not always. Once you add bags, seat selection and other extras, a budget fare can cost as much as a full-service airline, so compare the total price for what you need.

Is it cheaper to book two one-way tickets?

Sometimes. Two one-way fares, even on different airlines, can beat a return ticket. If you book separate tickets for a connection, leave plenty of time between flights, because a missed connection is usually your own risk.

Fares, fees and airline rules change often – always check the price, baggage allowance and fare rules on the airline or travel site before you book.
