The story of Ethiopia
Ethiopia has one of the longest human stories on Earth. In 1974 scientists in the Afar region unearthed 'Lucy', a skeleton of an early human ancestor more than three million years old, and the Rift Valley has yielded many other key fossils. In the first millennium BC, the kingdom of D'mt rose in the north, followed by the mighty Kingdom of Aksum, which traded with Rome, Persia and India, minted its own coins and raised giant carved stone stelae. In the 4th century King Ezana adopted Christianity, making Aksum one of the world's first Christian states, and Islam arrived early too, when followers of the Prophet found refuge here.
In the 12th and 13th centuries the Zagwe dynasty carved the extraordinary rock-hewn churches of Lalibela straight down into the living rock. The Solomonic dynasty, which claimed descent from King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba, then ruled for centuries, with emperors building castles at Gondar in the 17th century. In the east, the walled city of Harar became a great centre of Islamic learning and trade.

In the late 19th century Emperor Menelik II expanded the empire and founded Addis Ababa, and in 1896 his armies defeated an Italian invasion at the Battle of Adwa, a victory celebrated across Africa. Apart from an Italian occupation from 1936 to 1941, Ethiopia was never colonised. Emperor Haile Selassie ruled for decades until he was overthrown in 1974 by the Derg military regime, which in turn fell in 1991, after which a federal system was established and Eritrea became independent in 1993.
For visitors, this deep history is extraordinarily present. Ancient Ge'ez liturgy still echoes in churches, the country follows its own calendar and clock, and coffee ceremonies are part of daily life. UNESCO sites from Aksum and Lalibela to Gondar, Harar and the Simien Mountains make Ethiopia one of Africa's richest cultural destinations.
