Cayman Islands📜 History of Cayman Islands

The story of Cayman Islands

Unlike most Caribbean islands, the Cayman Islands appear to have had no permanent Indigenous population before Europeans arrived. Christopher Columbus sighted the two smaller islands, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman, in 1503 on his final voyage and named them Las Tortugas after the huge numbers of sea turtles nesting on their beaches. The name later changed to Caymanas, from a Carib word for the crocodiles or large lizards sailors reported seeing.

For more than a century the islands were visited mainly by ships stopping for turtle meat and fresh water, along with pirates, shipwrecked sailors and deserters. Britain took control along with Jamaica under the 1670 Treaty of Madrid, and permanent settlement began in the early 1700s. Settlers, including people of British origin and enslaved Africans, lived by turtling, fishing, rope-making and shipbuilding. The islands were governed as a dependency of Jamaica for well over a century, and slavery ended in 1834–1835 with the rest of the British Empire. In 1794 the Wreck of the Ten Sail, a convoy disaster on the reefs of Grand Cayman, entered local legend.

Read the full history

Caymanian men were famous seafarers, and through much of the twentieth century many worked on ships around the world, sending money home. When Jamaica became independent in 1962, the Cayman Islands chose to remain a British Overseas Territory. From the late 1960s new laws turned the islands into a major financial centre, while an international airport and the spread of scuba diving launched a tourism boom.

Today the islands are among the wealthiest places in the Caribbean, with a modern capital at George Town and a diverse population. Visitors can still glimpse old Cayman in traditional wooden houses, the restored Pedro St James great house, where an early assembly met, and a strong seafaring heritage celebrated during the annual Pirates Week festival.
