The story of Chile
People reached the far south of the Americas remarkably early: at Monte Verde in southern Chile, archaeologists found traces of a camp around 14,500 years old, among the oldest in the continent. Over the millennia the narrow land between the Andes and the Pacific was home to the Chinchorro of the northern desert, who mummified their dead long before the Egyptians, to Aymara and Atacameño farmers, to the Mapuche of the fertile centre and south, and to canoe and hunting peoples in Patagonia. On remote Easter Island, Polynesian voyagers built the famous moai statues.
In the 15th century the Inca Empire pushed south into central Chile, but the Mapuche resisted. Spanish conquistadors arrived in 1536, and Pedro de Valdivia founded Santiago in 1541. The Mapuche fought the Spanish for centuries along the Biobío River frontier, one of the longest resistances in colonial America, while the rest of the colony grew as a farming and mining outpost of the Viceroyalty of Peru.

Chile declared independence in 1810 and secured it in 1818 under Bernardo O'Higgins with help from José de San Martín. In the 19th century it expanded north after the War of the Pacific, gaining nitrate-rich deserts, and south into Araucanía and Patagonia. The 20th century saw democratic governments, the election of Salvador Allende in 1970, and a military coup in 1973 that began a 17-year dictatorship under Augusto Pinochet. Democracy returned in 1990, and Chile has since become one of Latin America's most stable and prosperous countries.
For travellers, that long story is written across an extraordinary landscape: Atacama villages and petroglyphs, colonial churches on Chiloé, the hillside port of Valparaíso, Mapuche culture in the Lake District, and the mysterious moai of Rapa Nui, all framed by volcanoes, glaciers and one of the driest deserts on Earth.
