Qatar📜 History of Qatar

The story of Qatar

People have lived on the Qatar peninsula since the Stone Age, and archaeologists have found flint tools, pottery and burial mounds left by early inhabitants. In ancient times the area was linked to the Dilmun civilisation centred on Bahrain, and to trade routes across the Gulf. Rock carvings at Al Jassasiya on the northeast coast, showing boats, cup marks and patterns, hint at a long seafaring tradition.

Islam spread to the region in the seventh century, and Qatar became part of successive Islamic caliphates. For centuries its scattered coastal towns lived from pearling, fishing and trade, while Bedouin tribes roamed the interior. In the eighteenth century tribes from the Arabian interior settled along the coast, and the town of Zubarah on the northwest shore grew into a thriving pearling and trading port. In the mid-nineteenth century the Al Thani family rose to prominence in Doha, and Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, regarded as the founder of the modern state, unified the tribes. Qatar came under Ottoman influence and later, from 1916, under a British protection treaty.

Read the full history

The collapse of the natural pearl trade in the 1930s brought hard times, but the discovery of oil at Dukhan in 1939 and its export after the Second World War changed everything. Qatar became independent on 3 September 1971, and its National Day is celebrated on 18 December, the date Sheikh Jassim took over rule in 1878. In the 1990s the development of the huge offshore North Field gas reserves made Qatar one of the world's largest exporters of liquefied natural gas and one of its richest countries per person.

Today Doha is a modern capital of striking skyscrapers, world-class museums and sporting venues, which hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022. Yet heritage remains central: visitors can explore the restored Souq Waqif, the UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah fort and archaeological site, traditional dhows on the Corniche, and desert landscapes where falconry and camel racing are still loved.
