Ukraine📜 History of Ukraine

The story of Ukraine

Ukraine's fertile black-earth steppe has drawn settlers for millennia. Neolithic farmers of the Cucuteni-Trypillia culture built some of Europe's largest early settlements here, later followed by horse-riding Scythians and Sarmatians, while Greek colonists founded trading towns along the Black Sea coast. In the ninth century Kyiv rose as the heart of Kyivan Rus, a powerful medieval state that adopted Orthodox Christianity under Prince Volodymyr in 988 and raised gilded churches such as St Sophia's Cathedral.

The Mongol invasions of the thirteenth century shattered Kyivan Rus, and over the following centuries Ukrainian lands were divided among the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the Crimean Khanate and, later, the Russian and Habsburg empires. On the wild southern frontier the Cossacks built a free-spirited military society centred on the Zaporozhian Sich, and in the seventeenth century Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky led an uprising that created a Cossack state. The nineteenth century brought a national cultural revival, with the poet Taras Shevchenko becoming its enduring symbol.

Read the full history

After the First World War a short-lived independent Ukrainian republic emerged before the country was absorbed into the Soviet Union. The twentieth century was marked by forced collectivisation, the devastating famine of 1932-33 known as the Holodomor, the Second World War and, in 1986, the Chornobyl nuclear disaster. Ukraine declared independence in 1991 as the Soviet Union dissolved. Popular protests in 2004 and 2013-14 reshaped its politics, and since 2014, and especially since the full-scale Russian invasion of 2022, the country has been at war.

For travellers, Ukraine's story is written in onion-domed monasteries, Habsburg-era coffee houses, Cossack islands and Carpathian wooden churches, several of them UNESCO-listed. Its culture of embroidered vyshyvanka shirts, painted pysanky eggs, hearty borscht and soulful folk song is fiercely cherished. While the war continues, much of the country is subject to strict travel warnings, so this heritage is best explored through study today and in person once conditions allow.
