El Salvador📜 History of El Salvador

The story of El Salvador

El Salvador, the smallest country in Central America, has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. The Maya built ceremonial centres such as Tazumal and San Andrés, while around 600 AD a volcanic eruption buried the farming village of Joya de Cerén in ash, preserving homes, tools and gardens so perfectly that it is called the 'Pompeii of the Americas'. Later the Nahua-speaking Pipil people established the domain of Cuzcatlán, whose name lives on in Salvadoran identity.

Spanish forces arrived in 1524 and, after fierce resistance, took control of the region, founding San Salvador. During colonial times the land was part of the Captaincy General of Guatemala, and indigo dye became its most valuable export. Independence came in 1821 along with the rest of Central America, and after the short-lived Federal Republic of Central America dissolved, El Salvador became a separate republic in 1841.

Read the full history

In the late 19th and 20th centuries, coffee replaced indigo and shaped the country's economy and politics, concentrating land in few hands. Social tensions led to a civil war from 1980 to 1992, which ended with peace accords that brought major political reforms. Since then the country has rebuilt, and many Salvadorans live abroad, maintaining close ties with home.

For travellers, El Salvador packs remarkable variety into a small space: surf beaches on the Pacific, a chain of volcanoes and crater lakes, colonial towns along the Ruta de las Flores and Maya ruins. Its people are known for warmth, and its national dish, the pupusa, is beloved across the region. Many visitors are surprised by how easy it is to see so much in a short trip.
