The story of Liberia
The forests and coast of what is now Liberia have been home to many peoples for centuries, including the Kpelle, Bassa, Gio, Mano, Kru, Grebo, Vai and others. Some groups migrated from the interior of West Africa, while the Kru became famous as expert seafarers who worked on ships along the coast. The Vai people developed their own syllabic script in the nineteenth century, one of the few Indigenous writing systems in Africa. Portuguese sailors named the area the Grain Coast after the melegueta pepper they traded here.
In the early nineteenth century the American Colonization Society began settling free-born and formerly enslaved African Americans on this coast, founding Monrovia in 1822, named after US President James Monroe. The settlers, later known as Americo-Liberians, brought American-style architecture, churches and institutions. Liberia declared independence in 1847, becoming Africa's first modern republic and one of only two African nations never colonised by Europeans.

For more than a century, political power remained largely with the settler elite, and relations with Indigenous communities were often tense. In the twentieth century rubber plantations transformed the economy, and President William Tubman's long rule brought infrastructure and an open-door investment policy. A coup in 1980 ended the old order, and two civil wars from 1989 to 2003 caused immense suffering before peace was restored.
In 2005 Liberia elected Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first elected female head of state, and the country has since held peaceful transfers of power while rebuilding. For visitors, Liberia is an off-the-beaten-track destination with uncrowded surf beaches at Robertsport, the rainforests of Sapo National Park, historic Providence Island where the settlers first landed, and a warm, English-speaking culture with a lively music and church scene.
