The story of Republic of the Congo
The Republic of the Congo stretches from the Atlantic coast deep into the rainforests of the Congo Basin. Forest peoples such as the BaAka have lived here for many thousands of years, and Bantu-speaking farmers spread across the region over the last few millennia, bringing ironworking and new crops. Powerful kingdoms emerged, including the Kingdom of Loango on the coast, the Teke kingdom on the plateaus and the edge of the great Kingdom of Kongo to the south.
Portuguese navigators reached the coast in the late fifteenth century, and Loango became an important port in the Atlantic trade, including the transatlantic slave trade, which deeply affected the region. In 1880 the explorer Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza signed a treaty with the Teke ruler Makoko, opening the way for French colonisation, and the settlement that became Brazzaville was founded on the Congo River. In 1910 Brazzaville became the capital of French Equatorial Africa, and during the Second World War it served as a symbolic capital of Free France.
Read the full history
The country gained independence on 15 August 1960. In 1969 it became the People's Republic of the Congo, one of Africa's first states to declare itself Marxist-Leninist, before multiparty politics returned in the early 1990s. The decade that followed saw periods of civil conflict, and oil production along the coast became the main pillar of the economy.
Today the Congo is one of Africa's lesser-known gems for adventurous travellers. Brazzaville's riverfront looks across to Kinshasa, while Odzala-Kokoua and Nouabalé-Ndoki national parks shelter western lowland gorillas and forest elephants. Congolese rumba, colourful markets and the stylish sapeurs of Brazzaville show off a confident, creative culture.
