Georgia📜 History of Georgia

The story of Georgia

Georgia's story begins astonishingly early: at Dmanisi, archaeologists found remains of some of the oldest known humans outside Africa, around 1.8 million years old. The region is also one of the world's cradles of wine, with evidence of winemaking going back some 8,000 years. In antiquity the west was the kingdom of Colchis, the land of the Golden Fleece in Greek myth, while the east formed the kingdom of Iberia, trading with Persia and the Greco-Roman world.

In the 4th century, inspired by the preaching of Saint Nino, King Mirian III made Christianity the state religion, and the distinctive Georgian alphabet developed soon after. Tbilisi, founded by King Vakhtang Gorgasali according to tradition, grew around its sulphur hot springs. The kingdom reached its Golden Age under David the Builder and Queen Tamar in the 11th to 13th centuries, when monasteries, poetry and frescoes flourished and Georgian rule stretched across much of the Caucasus.

Read the full history

Mongol invasions, the armies of Timur and centuries of rivalry between the Persian and Ottoman empires later fragmented the land into smaller kingdoms. Seeking protection, eastern Georgia came under the Russian Empire, which annexed it in 1801. After a brief period of independence from 1918 to 1921, Georgia became part of the Soviet Union, regaining independence in 1991. The years that followed brought economic hardship and political change, and the country has since rebuilt itself with a strong focus on tourism and culture.

Visitors today find a land where ancient traditions are very much alive: cave monasteries and hilltop churches, UNESCO-listed sites such as Mtskheta and Upper Svaneti, polyphonic singing, and wine still fermented in clay qvevri buried in the ground. Above all, Georgians are famed for their hospitality and the toast-filled feast known as the supra.

  • Family-run guesthouses in the mountains often include home-cooked dinners and are great value.

Georgia🛡️ Safety & money in Georgia

Stay safe

  • Georgia is generally safe, but don't attempt to visit Abkhazia or South Ossetia – check your government's advice on these regions.
  • Driving can be aggressive and mountain roads are narrow; choose experienced drivers for routes like Svaneti and Tusheti.
  • Watch out for overly generous drinking at feasts – homemade chacha spirit is very strong.
  • Hike with a map and check weather, as mountain conditions can change quickly.

Money

  • The lari is the currency; cards are widely accepted in cities, but carry cash for marshrutkas, villages and markets.
  • ATMs are plentiful in towns, though they're rare in remote mountain areas.
  • Many restaurants add a service charge to the bill; otherwise around 10% is a common tip.
