The story of Hong Kong
Long before skyscrapers, the hills and bays of Hong Kong were home to Neolithic communities whose rock carvings and pottery survive on remote shores. The area came under Chinese imperial rule from the Qin dynasty onward, and for centuries it was a quiet frontier of fishing villages, salt pans and farms. Walled villages built by Punti and Hakka clans, and boat-dwelling Tanka fishing families, shaped the rural culture that can still be glimpsed in the New Territories.
Everything changed in the 19th century. After the First Opium War, Hong Kong Island was ceded to Britain in 1842, followed by the Kowloon peninsula in 1860. In 1898 the New Territories were leased to Britain for 99 years. The colony grew into a busy free port linking China with the world, drawing merchants, workers and refugees, and Victoria Harbour became one of the great anchorages of Asia.

Japan occupied Hong Kong from December 1941 until 1945. After the war, waves of arrivals from mainland China swelled the population, and the city reinvented itself first as a manufacturing powerhouse and then as a global centre of finance, trade and shipping. Public housing estates, the Mass Transit Railway and land reclaimed from the sea transformed the landscape. In 1984 Britain and China signed the Joint Declaration, and on 1 July 1997 sovereignty was transferred to China, with Hong Kong becoming a Special Administrative Region under the principle of 'one country, two systems'.
For visitors, this history is woven through the city: colonial landmarks beside gleaming towers, incense-filled temples to Tin Hau and Man Mo, Hakka walled villages, harbour ferries running for over a century, and Cantonese food culture at its finest - all just minutes from mountain trails and quiet outlying islands.
