LesothoπŸ“œ History of Lesotho

The story of Lesotho

Long before the Basotho nation existed, San hunter-gatherers roamed the high valleys of what is now Lesotho, leaving behind thousands of rock paintings of eland, hunters and rituals in sandstone shelters. Over centuries, Sotho-speaking farmers and herders settled the lowlands, raising cattle and growing sorghum, while dinosaurs had left their footprints in the rocks long before any of them.

The modern nation was forged in the early 19th century during a time of upheaval across southern Africa known as the Difaqane or Mfecane. A shrewd young chief named Moshoeshoe gathered scattered clans and refugees and in 1824 made his stronghold on the flat-topped mountain of Thaba Bosiu, which was never taken by force. Through diplomacy as much as defence, he built the Basotho kingdom, welcoming French missionaries who helped introduce schools and a written form of Sesotho.

Read the full history

Wars with Boer settlers over fertile land led Moshoeshoe to seek British protection, and in 1868 the territory became the British protectorate of Basutoland. It was briefly run by the Cape Colony, where attempts to disarm the Basotho sparked the Gun War of 1880–81, before London resumed direct control. Because of this arrangement, Lesotho was never absorbed into South Africa, and it became the independent Kingdom of Lesotho on 4 October 1966, a constitutional monarchy with a king as head of state. Since then, the country has developed huge highland dams that supply water to its neighbour.

For travellers, Lesotho offers a rare, unspoiled mountain culture. Shepherds wrapped in colourful Basotho blankets and conical mokorotlo hats ride sturdy ponies along mountain trails, rondavel villages cling to hillsides, and visitors can climb Thaba Bosiu, see ancient rock art and dinosaur footprints, and explore the UNESCO-listed Sehlabathebe National Park.
