Montserrat📜 History of Montserrat

The story of Montserrat

Archaeological finds show that Amerindian peoples lived on Montserrat for many centuries before Europeans arrived, farming, fishing and making pottery; the island was known to the Kalinago as Alliouagana, often translated as 'land of the prickly bush'. Christopher Columbus sighted it in 1493 on his second voyage and named it after the mountain monastery of Montserrat near Barcelona.

English and Irish settlers arrived from nearby St Kitts in 1632, and many more Irish Catholics followed, giving the island an enduring Irish character. Sugar, cotton and lime plantations were worked by enslaved Africans, who soon formed the majority of the population. The island changed hands between Britain and France several times before being returned to Britain in 1783. On 17 March 1768, enslaved people planned an uprising that was discovered and suppressed; today St Patrick's Day on Montserrat honours both the Irish heritage and this attempted rebellion. Slavery was abolished in the 1830s, after which lime juice production, notably by the Montserrat Company, became important.

Read the full history

Montserrat remained a British colony and is today a British Overseas Territory. In the late twentieth century it became known for music after Beatles producer George Martin opened AIR Studios, where stars recorded hit albums. That era ended when Hurricane Hugo struck in 1989. Then, in 1995, the long-dormant Soufrière Hills volcano erupted. Over the following years eruptions buried the capital, Plymouth, under ash and mudflows, and much of the population left the island. The southern part became an exclusion zone, and a new town centre grew in the north around Little Bay and Brades.

Today Montserrat is a small, resilient community and a unique destination. Visitors can view the abandoned capital from safe vantage points, learn about volcanic science at the Montserrat Volcano Observatory, hike rainforest trails and enjoy black-sand beaches on one of the Caribbean's least crowded islands.
