Saint Kitts and Nevis📜 History of Saint Kitts and Nevis

The story of Saint Kitts and Nevis

Long before Europeans arrived, the islands of St Kitts and Nevis were home to Indigenous peoples who travelled up the Caribbean chain from South America. The Kalinago, who lived here when Europeans came, called St Kitts 'Liamuiga', meaning fertile land, a name now carried by the island's dormant volcano. Christopher Columbus sighted the islands in 1493 on his second voyage.

In 1623 Thomas Warner established a settlement on St Kitts, the first successful English colony in the Caribbean, and French settlers arrived soon after. The two powers briefly allied against the Kalinago, who were driven from the island after a violent clash remembered at Bloody Point. For over a century England and France shared and fought over St Kitts, until the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713 gave it to Britain. The islands became rich from sugar produced by enslaved Africans on plantations that covered the slopes.

To defend this wealth, the British built Brimstone Hill Fortress, nicknamed the 'Gibraltar of the West Indies'. The French captured it after a siege in 1782, but it returned to Britain in 1783. Nevis, meanwhile, became famous for its hot springs and as the birthplace of Alexander Hamilton, one of the founding fathers of the United States. Slavery was abolished in the 1830s, and the islands remained British colonies, joined at various times with Anguilla.

St Kitts and Nevis gained independence on 19 September 1983 as a federation within the Commonwealth. The sugar industry finally closed in 2005, and tourism now drives the economy. Visitors can ride the old sugar railway around St Kitts, explore the UNESCO-listed Brimstone Hill, hike rainforest volcanoes, relax on golden and black-sand beaches, and wander Charlestown, the quieter, historic heart of Nevis.
