Dominica📜 History of Dominica

The story of Dominica

Dominica's earliest inhabitants arrived from South America, first Arawak-speaking peoples and later the Kalinago, who called the island Waitukubuli, meaning 'tall is her body'. The Kalinago were skilled canoe builders and fierce defenders of their mountainous home. Dominica's steep volcanic peaks and dense rainforest made it one of the last Caribbean islands to be colonised, and it remains home to the largest surviving Kalinago community in the region.

Christopher Columbus sighted the island on a Sunday in 1493 and named it after the Latin word for that day. For nearly two centuries, Kalinago resistance and the rugged terrain kept European settlers away, and in the eighteenth century Britain and France agreed for a time to leave it neutral. French settlers nevertheless arrived, bringing coffee estates and the Creole language still spoken today, before Britain took control after the Treaty of Paris in 1763. The island changed hands during later wars before settling under British rule.

Read the full history

Plantations growing sugar, coffee and later limes relied on enslaved Africans until emancipation in the 1830s. Many people who escaped slavery formed free communities in the interior known as Maroons. In the twentieth century bananas became the island's main export, and Dominica moved toward self-government, gaining full independence on 3 November 1978 as a republic within the Commonwealth.

Hurricanes, especially David in 1979 and Maria in 2017, have tested the island repeatedly, but Dominica has rebuilt with a focus on climate resilience and eco-tourism. Visitors today come for wild nature rather than resorts: boiling lakes, waterfalls, hot springs, whale watching and the long-distance Waitukubuli National Trail. The Kalinago Territory, Creole festivals and French-influenced place names reveal a rich, layered heritage.
