The story of Portugal
Portugal's western edge of Europe has drawn settlers since prehistoric times, as the remarkable open-air rock engravings of the Côa Valley show. Celtic and Iberian peoples, including the Lusitanians who fiercely resisted Rome, lived here before the Romans made the region part of their empire, building roads, bridges and temples such as the one still standing in Évora. Germanic Suebi and Visigoths followed, and from 711 most of the peninsula came under Moorish rule, leaving a lasting mark on farming, architecture and language.
In the twelfth century Afonso Henriques declared himself king, and Portugal was recognised as an independent kingdom, expanding south during the Christian reconquest until the Algarve was taken in 1249. Its borders have remained remarkably stable ever since. In the fifteenth century, inspired by Prince Henry the Navigator, Portuguese sailors pushed down the African coast; Vasco da Gama reached India in 1498 and Pedro Álvares Cabral reached Brazil in 1500, creating a global maritime empire.

Wealth from the spice trade and later Brazilian gold funded grand monasteries and the ornate Manueline style. A devastating earthquake struck Lisbon in 1755, and the city was rebuilt with elegant grid streets under the Marquis of Pombal. The nineteenth century brought French invasions and the loss of Brazil, and in 1910 the monarchy was replaced by a republic. From the 1930s Portugal was governed by the authoritarian Estado Novo regime.
The peaceful Carnation Revolution of 25 April 1974 restored democracy and led to independence for the African colonies. Portugal joined the European Community in 1986 and has since become one of Europe's favourite destinations. Visitors today discover tiled facades, fado music, port and wine regions, castles, golden Algarve beaches, Atlantic surf and the subtropical islands of Madeira and the Azores, all at a relaxed pace.
