The story of Andorra
Andorra's high Pyrenean valleys have sheltered people since prehistoric times, and Iberian-speaking tribes were farming and herding here long before the Romans arrived. Local legend credits Charlemagne with granting the valleys a charter in return for help against the Moors, and by the early Middle Ages the territory had become part of the domain of the Counts of Urgell, who later passed their rights to the Bishop of Urgell across the border in Catalonia.
The country's unusual political shape dates from 1278, when a dispute between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix was settled by a paréage – a feudal agreement giving the two lords joint sovereignty. The Count's rights eventually passed to the French crown and then to the French head of state, which is why Andorra still has two co-princes today: the Bishop of Urgell and the President of France. In 1419 the valleys gained their own assembly, the Consell de la Terra, one of the oldest parliamentary bodies in Europe.
Read the full history
For centuries Andorra remained a poor, isolated mountain community of shepherds, tobacco growers and smugglers, largely ignored by the wider world. Roads arrived only in the 20th century, and with them came duty-free shopping, ski resorts and a steady stream of visitors from Spain and France. Tourism and commerce transformed the economy from the 1950s onwards, turning tiny villages into busy towns along the main valley.
In 1993 Andorrans approved their first written constitution, establishing a parliamentary democracy while keeping the co-princes as a joint, largely ceremonial head of state, and the country joined the United Nations the same year. Today visitors find a curious mix: glossy shopping streets in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes, world-class skiing and hiking, and quiet stone hamlets with Romanesque chapels and bell towers that recall the valleys' long, independent past. Catalan is the official language, but Spanish and French are widely spoken.
