The story of San Marino
According to tradition, San Marino was founded in 301 AD by Marinus, a Christian stonemason from the island of Rab in present-day Croatia, who fled persecution and settled on Monte Titano with a small community. Over time this hilltop refuge grew into a self-governing commune, and it is often described as the world's oldest surviving republic.
During the Middle Ages, San Marino developed its own laws and institutions, with an assembly of family heads (the Arengo) and later the Great and General Council. Its first statutes date from the thirteenth century, and in 1600 it adopted a written constitution that remains the basis of its government today. The republic is led by two Captains Regent, elected every six months, a tradition dating back centuries. Its three towers on the ridge of Monte Titano became symbols of independence.
Read the full history
San Marino's survival owed much to diplomacy and its rugged location. It was briefly occupied by Cardinal Alberoni's forces in 1739–1740, but its independence was restored by the Pope. Napoleon respected its independence, and in the nineteenth century, during the unification of Italy, San Marino sheltered refugees including Giuseppe Garibaldi, earning Italy's recognition of its independence. In the Second World War it remained officially neutral but sheltered many refugees and suffered bombing in 1944.
Today San Marino is a small, prosperous microstate, with a thriving tourism industry and close ties to Italy. Visitors can explore medieval streets, fortress towers, museums and spectacular views from Monte Titano, part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008.
