Türkiye📜 History of Türkiye

The story of Türkiye

Türkiye sits at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, and its land holds some of humanity's oldest stories. At Göbekli Tepe in the southeast, hunter-gatherers raised carved stone pillars more than 11,000 years ago, long before Stonehenge, and Çatalhöyük was one of the world's earliest large farming towns. Later, the Hittites built a powerful Bronze Age empire in Anatolia, while the legendary city of Troy stood near the Dardanelles.

Greek colonies flourished along the Aegean coast, producing cities such as Ephesus, before Persian, Alexandrian and then Roman rule. In 330 AD Emperor Constantine made Byzantium, renamed Constantinople, the capital of the Roman world, and for over a thousand years it was the heart of the Byzantine Empire, crowned by the great church of Hagia Sophia. From the eleventh century Turkic peoples arrived from Central Asia; the Seljuks established themselves in Anatolia, building caravanserais and mosques along trade routes.

Read the full history

In 1453 the Ottoman sultan Mehmed II captured Constantinople, and the Ottoman Empire grew into a vast power stretching across southeastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. Under Suleiman the Magnificent in the sixteenth century, it reached its cultural and political peak, leaving a legacy of grand mosques, palaces and bazaars. After centuries of gradual decline, the empire collapsed following the First World War.

In 1923 Mustafa Kemal Atatürk founded the Republic of Turkey, with Ankara as its capital, and launched sweeping reforms, from a new alphabet to a secular legal system. Today Türkiye is a dynamic country bridging two continents. Travellers can explore Istanbul's Byzantine and Ottoman treasures, the fairy-chimney landscapes of Cappadocia, the ancient ruins of Ephesus and the sunny Turquoise Coast, all while enjoying legendary hospitality and one of the world's great cuisines.
