The story of Israel
The land along the eastern Mediterranean that includes modern Israel has one of the longest continuous records of human settlement on Earth. Early humans lived in the caves of Mount Carmel, and Jericho nearby ranks among the oldest towns known. Canaanite cities such as Megiddo and Hazor rose in the Bronze Age, and in the Iron Age the kingdoms of Israel and Judah emerged, with Jerusalem as a royal and religious centre whose traditions shaped Judaism, Christianity and Islam.
Over the following centuries the region was ruled by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Greeks and then Rome, under which King Herod built grand projects like Caesarea and Masada. Jesus lived and preached in Galilee and Jerusalem during this era. After the Roman destruction of the Second Temple in 70 AD, much of the Jewish population was dispersed. Byzantine churches, the Islamic conquest in the 7th century, Crusader castles, Mamluk mosques and four centuries of Ottoman rule each left lasting landmarks.
Read the full history
In the late 19th century, the Zionist movement encouraged Jewish immigration, and after the First World War Britain governed the territory under a League of Nations mandate. The State of Israel was declared in 1948. The decades since have seen rapid development alongside a complex and ongoing conflict with neighbours and with Palestinians, which travellers should approach with sensitivity to differing perspectives.
For visitors, the country offers an extraordinary density of history and faith: Jerusalem's Old City with its sacred sites, the desert fortress of Masada, the Dead Sea, the Sea of Galilee, Roman Caesarea and Crusader Acre, as well as Tel Aviv's beaches and Bauhaus architecture. Its food scene blends Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and diaspora traditions. Because the security situation can change quickly, always check official travel advice before going.
