The story of Malaysia
People have lived in Malaysia for tens of thousands of years: the Niah Caves in Sarawak hold some of the oldest evidence of modern humans in Southeast Asia, and the Lenggong Valley in Perak preserves ancient stone tools. Indigenous peoples such as the Orang Asli on the peninsula and the many communities of Borneo carry on traditions rooted in this deep past. From early in the first millennium AD, trading kingdoms like those of the Bujang Valley in Kedah absorbed Hindu and Buddhist influences from India.
Around 1400 a prince from Sumatra founded Malacca, which grew into a wealthy sultanate controlling the busy Strait of Malacca. Its rulers embraced Islam, which spread widely through the Malay world. The port's riches drew Europeans: the Portuguese captured Malacca in 1511, the Dutch took it in 1641, and the British later established Penang, Malacca and Singapore as the Straits Settlements. Through the 19th century Britain extended control over the Malay states and North Borneo, while tin mining and rubber plantations drew large numbers of Chinese and Indian workers, creating today's multicultural society.

Japanese forces occupied the region from 1941 to 1945. After the war, the Federation of Malaya was formed, and a communist insurgency known as the Malayan Emergency lasted into 1960. Malaya gained independence on 31 August 1957, celebrated as Merdeka Day. On 16 September 1963 it joined with Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore to form Malaysia, though Singapore left in 1965.
Since then Malaysia has grown into one of Southeast Asia's most developed economies, symbolised by Kuala Lumpur's Petronas Twin Towers. For travellers, it offers an easy and rewarding mix: Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous cultures side by side, colonial streets in George Town and Malacca, ancient rainforests, tropical islands and Mount Kinabalu, along with some of Asia's most celebrated street food.
