North Macedonia📜 History of North Macedonia

The story of North Macedonia

The valleys and lakes of North Macedonia have been inhabited since Neolithic times, and the Bronze Age site of Kokino is thought to have served as an ancient observatory tracking the sun and moon. In antiquity the region was home to peoples such as the Paeonians, and it came under the influence of the kingdom of Macedon and later Rome, which built roads like the Via Egnatia and cities such as Stobi and Heraclea Lynkestis, whose mosaics can still be admired today.

Slavic peoples settled the area from the sixth and seventh centuries. In the ninth century Saints Clement and Naum founded a famous school of learning at Ohrid, which helped spread Slavic literacy and Christianity across the Balkans, and the lakeside town became a great spiritual centre filled with churches and monasteries. After centuries of Byzantine, Bulgarian and Serbian rule, the region was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the late fourteenth century, remaining under Ottoman control for more than five hundred years and gaining bazaars, mosques and stone bridges that still shape its towns.

Read the full history

A rising national movement culminated in the Ilinden Uprising of 1903. After the Balkan Wars of 1912-13 the territory was divided, and the northern part became part of Serbia and later Yugoslavia, becoming a constituent republic after 1944. A devastating earthquake struck Skopje in 1963, leading to a bold modernist rebuilding of the capital. The country declared independence in 1991, and after a long naming dispute it adopted the name North Macedonia in 2019 under the Prespa Agreement, joining NATO in 2020.

Today North Macedonia rewards travellers with an extraordinary mix of Byzantine frescoes, Ottoman bazaars, Yugoslav-era architecture and dramatic mountain scenery. Lake Ohrid, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the jewel, while lively Skopje, wine regions, canyon hikes and traditional villages offer great value and genuine hospitality.
