The story of Tonga
Tonga was one of the first island groups in Polynesia to be settled. Around 2,800 years ago, seafaring Lapita people, known for their finely decorated pottery, landed on Tongatapu, and from these early communities a distinctive Polynesian culture developed. By around the 10th century a line of sacred rulers, the Tu'i Tonga, had emerged, and over the following centuries their maritime chiefdom extended its influence across neighbouring islands such as Samoa, Fiji, Niue and 'Uvea through voyaging, marriage and tribute.
The legacy of this era can still be seen at Lapaha, where terraced stone tombs called langi mark royal burial grounds, and at the Ha'amonga 'a Maui, a massive stone trilithon raised around the 13th century. Over time, power was divided between sacred and political lines of chiefs, setting the stage for later rivalries.

Dutch navigators passed through in the 17th century, and Captain James Cook's visits in the 1770s earned the archipelago the nickname 'the Friendly Islands'. Methodist missionaries arrived in the 1820s, and after a period of civil war, the chief Tāufa'āhau united the islands, becoming King George Tupou I. He introduced a written constitution in 1875, one of the earliest in the Pacific. Tonga became a British protected state in 1900 but was never formally colonised, regaining full control of its foreign affairs in 1970. In the 21st century the kingdom introduced political reforms that expanded the role of elected representatives.
For visitors, Tonga offers a rare chance to experience a living Polynesian monarchy. Sunday church choirs, kava ceremonies, umu feasts and finely woven ta'ovala mats are part of everyday life, while the islands' clear waters, coral reefs and the humpback whales that arrive each winter make it a superb place to slow down and explore.
