The story of Somalia
Somalia occupies the Horn of Africa, with the longest coastline on the African mainland facing the Gulf of Aden and the Indian Ocean. Its prehistoric heritage includes the vivid rock paintings of Laas Geel, showing cattle and herders thousands of years old. Many historians link the region to the 'Land of Punt', the source of incense and myrrh that ancient Egyptians sailed to reach, and Greek and Roman sources describe trading ports along this coast.
Islam arrived early, and from the medieval period coastal cities such as Mogadishu, Merca, Barawa and Zeila thrived on Indian Ocean trade, exporting livestock, hides and aromatics while importing cloth and spices. The Ajuran Sultanate controlled much of the south from around the 13th to 17th centuries, managing wells and trade routes, while other sultanates rose in the north. Somali society developed around clan networks, pastoralism and a rich oral poetry tradition.
Read the full history
In the late 19th century, European powers divided the Somali territories: Britain took the north, Italy the south, and France and Ethiopia controlled other areas. In 1960 British Somaliland and Italian Somaliland united to form the independent Somali Republic. After a period of military government, the state collapsed in 1991, leading to prolonged conflict and instability. Since then, governments have worked to rebuild institutions, while some regions have established their own administrations.
For travellers, Somalia holds remarkable heritage: ancient rock art, historic coastal towns, beautiful beaches and a renowned culture of poetry and hospitality. However, security conditions remain very difficult in many areas and most governments advise against travel, so anyone considering a visit must check their government's latest official advice first.
